DNA Links Suspect to Bluffs Murder 11 Years Later

DNA that was found on a five-dollar bill has linked a suspect to a 2003 murder in Council Bluffs.

47-year-old Thomas Sanchez of La Vista fatally stabbed 33-year-old Nelson Alvarez-Hernandez outside of a home near 13th Street and 16th Avenue in Council Bluffs on July 31st, 2003.

Alvarez-Hernandez dressed as a woman and went by the name of Selena, but Pottawattamie County prosecutors say that the incident is not considered a hate crime.

Blood was found on a five-dollar bill that was discovered at the murder scene and authorities matched the DNA to Sanchez last year.
