MECA Board Sets Special Meeting

MECA Board Sets Special Meeting

The next chapter of the political fued between the City of Omaha and the MECA board will play out Thursday morning during a special meeting.

The MECA Board will reconsider a 3-2 vote last month to extend the term of each member from 5 to 7 years. Mayor Jean Stothert says the vote blindsided her and the City Attorney says the decision violated the contract between the City and MECA.

City Attorney Paul Kratz gave MECA thirty days to reverse the vote or suffer the consequences.  That could mean the termination of the contract.  The attorney for MECA said the board had the right to amend their by-laws and vote to increase board members' terms.

Mayor Stothert says she agrees with the board's decision to increase the size of the board from 5 to 7 members.
