Sarpy County will extend health care benefits to the spouses of gay county employees who live in Nebraska.

Commissioners voted 3-2 on Tuesday to offer health benefits to all legally married same sex couples regardless of where they live.

The Sarpy County board recently voted to provide same sex couples with health coverage if they were legally married and only if they resided in a state that recognizes same sex marriage, such as Iowa.

The policy change takes effect on February first.
