Two Workers Injured In Stairwell Collapse

Two Workers Injured In Stairwell Collapse

For the second time in a week Omaha firefigthers were called to a collapse inside of a building.  Around 2:30 Monday afternoon two workers fell about 20 feet after a temporary stairwell gave way inside a building under construction near 13th and Jones.

Omaha Battalion Chief Troy Brannen says initial reports indicated that four people were injured.   He says a temporary stairwell made of wood and blocks collapsed when the wood gave way. The workers fell about 20 feet.

One was taken to the hospital with life threatening injuries.  The other worker suffered less serious injuries.  Brannen says no one was trapped in the building and there was no risk of a further collapse.

It was just a week ago when two people were killed and several injured when the International Nutrition building collapsed.  Brannen says last weeks call was on their minds today as they prepared for the worst.  He says extra equipment was brought in just in case people were trapped.
