In case of an emergency, it’s important for kids to know their parent’s phone number. But getting a little one to memorize those digits can be a challenge. Phone numbers are long and kids’ attention spans aren’t, so this little jingle can help.
This brilliant idea was discovered by Jen Rice of the blog Playdough to Plato and uses the theme song from the old school “Mickey Mouse Club” theme song. You just swap the letters M-I-C-K-E-Y-M-O-U-S-E with the phone number and name of who it belongs to. So if mom’s number is (374) 584-2931, the song is “3-7-4-5-8-4-2-9-3-1-MOM!”
It takes a little practice, but the kids will catch on and soon enough the tune will be stuck in their brain, and yours as well. And here are a few other effective ways to teach your kid a phone number:
- Play “phone number hopscotch” - Draw a dial pad on the sidewalk with chalk and see how fast they can step on the right numbers in order.
- Let your kid order pizza for the family - They’ll learn the digits quickly with pizza as a motivator.
- Make the number their iPad password - You won’t believe how fast their little fingers can type the numbers when access to their shows and games depends on it.
