In her Boston Globe advice column, Robin Abrahams is asked whether parents should force their kids to hug and kiss relatives at family gatherings. "Children should be taught from an early age that no one has the right to insist on physical affection from them or force it on them," says Abrahams, who thinks that "high-fives, fist bumps, air kisses, bows, and curtseys" are alternative ways of showing affection or bidding adieu that are far more comfortable for shy children.
