Vacationing Family Fixes Vandalized Memorial Bench

While vacationing in Newport, Oregon, a family stepped up to do a good deed for the community. The Newport Police Department reports that Kevin Sawyer, a police officer in Longview, and his family were visiting the town when they noticed a memorial bench had been vandalized with graffiti.

The bench was made in honor of Oregon State Police Senior Trooper James Hatch, who passed away from cancer. When the Sawyers saw an opportunity to help out, they took it. The family bought the painting supplies they needed and fixed up the bench. In a Facebook post, Newport Police say the city is “very fortunate” to have families like them visit their community.

“It may not be perfect,” Sawyer says, “but the lessons learned and memories made on this vacation will last a lifetime.” See pics here
