Think you’re too busy for “me time?” Then you probably need it even more. Devoting time just for yourself may feel impossible when your schedule is already packed full, but it doesn’t have to be a pipe dream. Studies show that dedicating time just for you every day may actually help you get more done because it can boost productivity and creativity. Plus, it has a positive impact on your wellbeing and happiness.
These tips can help you carve out the “me time” you deserve and make it a lasting habit:
- Take the pressure off - Don’t be fooled into thinking that you’re wasting time if you’re not being productive or achieving something. You can use your “me time” in any way you like and the fact that you’re taking time out of your busy day to focus on yourself is already an achievement.
- Start with baby steps - Feel like you can only spare five or 10 minutes? Take it! Even a brief break to enjoy a cup of tea or read five pages in your book gives you a break to recharge and refresh. And if you can work up to longer stretches of time? Even better.
- Get those ZZZs - Quality sleep helps improve concentration, productivity and performance, which means you’ll get through work and your to-do list faster, giving you more time to spend on yourself. Talk about a win-win.
- Do what you love - Whether that’s a quick 10-minute stretch or a call to catch up with your bestie, spend your “me time” doing something you enjoy that will keep you coming back for more.
- Switch it off - Resist the temptation to use your time scrolling social media or answering just one more work email. Protect your “me time” so you get the most out of it and those notifications will still be there when you’re finished.
- Make it official - Having a hard time making good on your intentions to take time for yourself? Put it on the calendar like any other appointment you plan to keep. Seeing it in black and white may help you see it as a non-negotiable and that gets you one step closer to making it a habit.
