As the US faces a brutal heatwave, we want to do everything we can to keep our homes cool. There could be some mistakes, though, that are costing precious air.
Mistakes include:
- Picking the wrong exterior paint colors. Darker colors absorb heat so choose a lighter shade like white, beige or grey to reflect some of the sun's rays.
- Using heat-producing appliances during peak hours, like the stove or even the dishwasher.
- Letting in too much light. Use curtains or blinds to block out the sun.
- Inadequate insulation
- Going too low of a temp on the thermostat. That raises your energy costs and temperature.
