Does the sound of creaking floors or unidentified noises in your house have you spooked? With Halloween coming up, this is the time for all things creepy and scary, but it turns out, a lot of people have noticed eerie things in their home that aren’t holiday-related. According to a new survey of 1,000 Americans, two in five have experienced unexplained or unusual occurrences inside their home and 16% actually believe their home is haunted.

The poll also reveals:

  • The encounters include feeling a presence they couldn’t see (42%), hearing unexplained or unusual sounds, like voices or footsteps (37%) and seeing apparitions or ghostly figures (19%).
  • Common paranormal experiences at home also include animals acting strangely, lights turning on or off and unexplained or unusual smells.
  • As for where they happen inside the home, it’s not the basement or attic that has people frightened. Nearly half (49%) have had a weird encounter in a bedroom, 26% in the living room, 23% in the kitchen, and just 12% report unusual activity in the basement.
  • One in 10 have used a Ouija board in their home, but 42% say they wouldn’t do it again.
  • About a third (31%) admit being freaked out by old homes, and 39% say they’ve felt the presence of a deceased family member or friend.
  • 43% say their community has local ghost stories or legends and 52% believe those stories are real.
  • Despite all that, 24% say they would buy a house that’s haunted and they’d be willing to pay an average of $249,557 for it.
