Recently declassified CIA documents reveal that the U.S. government made an effort to find Adolf Hitler a full decade after he’d died by suicide.

Papers from the U.S. War Department theorize that Hitler “may have had a secret hideout at a spa hotel in La Falda, Argentina,” where the hotel’s owners were said to be “supporters” and occasional vacation partners.

The documents also reveal an informant, SS trooper Phillip Citroen, who claimed to have monthly conversations with Hitler after he’d reportedly died. It’s not known if more information exists in documents that are still classified, or if the search was just abandoned.
