- On Tuesday, (Dec. 7) Instagram rolled out a new set of safety features for kids, teens, and their parents, a day before Instagram's CEO Adam Mosseri is set to testify before lawmakers.
- The changes include setting daily time limits, a new "take a break" feature, and offering optional parental oversight of their children's accounts. However, in order for parents to use these tools, their kids need to opt-in.
- Instagram, which is owned by Meta (formerly Facebook), has come under intense scrutiny since a whistleblower exposed internal research showing the app can harm users, and bring on body imaging issues and mental health concerns for teenagers.
- Today, (Dec. 8) Adam Mosseri is expected to be grilled on what Instagram knows about its potential harm to young users and what the company is doing about those concerns.
- It will be interesting to see how Congress reacts, if at all to these changes.
