A Missouri boy baked cookies for his elderly neighbor whose wife died this year. Like many of us, during the pandemic, ten-year-old Sam Wissmann picked up baking. His favorite things to bake are snickerdoodle cookies, which are also the favorite of one of his neighbors, 90-year-oldJim. Before Jim’s wife passed away earlier this year, she always made him snickerdoodles for Christmas.
The widower wanted to carry on his wife’s tradition and asked his neighbor, Susie, if she had a snickerdoodle recipe he could have, but she found something even better. While on a Facebook page for their community of Kirkwood, Missouri, Susie found out about Sam and his love of baking snickerdoodles. So she decided to connect Sam and Jim.
Sam was more than happy to have a fellow snickerdoodle lover to share his cookies with and got right to work baking up a batch. The cookies were delivered to Jim with a card that read, “My name is Sam, I’m 10 years old, I enjoy making snickerdoodles, I hope you enjoy them.” When Susie dropped off the cookies, she says Jim was touched to tears. And now Sam hopes this will become a new Christmas tradition for them both.
