đđ Minnesota Womanâs Unique Friendship with Greenie the Sunfish! đâ¨
Meet Holly Jorgensen, making headlines with her extraordinary bond with a sunfish named Greenie. Almost a decade ago, Greenie started visiting her dock, and their friendship has only grown stronger each year.
đżÂ âDigging for worms for a treat for Greenie,â Holly says, scooping up soil with her shovel. With a wiggly bowl in hand, she walks onto a wobbly wooden dock, scanning the lake. âThere he is,â she says.
đ A sunfish looks up at Holly from just under the water. âHi, sweetie,â Holly greets Greenie. As much as a fish can show emotion, Greenie seems pleased to see her.
đ§ Holly puts her hands into the water. Other fish dart away, but Greenie comes closer. âHi, honey,â she says.
đ Holly wasnât looking for a pal when she first locked eyes with the green sunfish off her dock. âBut he looked at me like Iâve never had a fish look at me,â she says. From fish eyes, grew a fast friendship.
đą Holly holds out a freshly harvested worm. âCan you jump?â she asks Greenie. Moments later, he complies, jumping for Hollyâs treat. âHe sure does seem like a special fish,â Holly says. âHe just acts different from other fish.â
đââď¸ Even before Holly began serving snacks, Greenie would be waiting at the dock when she arrived for her daily swims. âWhy he in particular recognizes me and looks at me the way he does and follows me around, I donât know. But itâs wonderful,â Holly says.
đ Â 2024 UPDATE:Â This spring, just after the ice melted, Greenie the sunfish returned to Hollyâs dock. This marks the ninth summer Holly and Greenie will spend together.
đ Holly is currently writing a book about their adventures, titled âGreenie & the Girl: An Enchanted Fish Memoir for All Generations.â For more information, check out Hollyâs blog! đ
