Like many parents, Stephanie Crespo regularly told her 9-year-old daughter, Isabella, to stop watching YouTube.
Then one of those videos helped Isabella come to her momâs aid.
Stephanie was eating ice cream with frozen strawberry pieces when one became stuck in her throat. She stood up and tried to cough, but she could not breathe or explain to her children what was happening.
Isabella recognized that her mom was choking. She went over and performed abdominal thrusts several times until the strawberry moved and Stephanie could breathe again.
Once everyone had settled down, Stephanie asked her daughter how she knew what to do.
Isabellaâs answer surprised her. She had learned it by watching a YouTube video.
The same screen time Stephanie often questioned had given her daughter information she remembered when her family needed it. Isabella later said she stayed calm because she knew what to do.
Stephanie is now encouraging parents to talk with their children about choking emergencies, staying calm and getting help. It is a practical conversation most families hope they never need, but one that can make a difference.
