WHY IS FIGURE SKATING'S TRIPLE AXEL SO DIFFICULT?

Mirai Nagasu became the first U.S. woman to land a triple axel in figure skating at the Olympics.

She is only the third woman ever to do so in the history of the Winter Games.

Tonya Harding actually did it in competition many years ago. It just wasn't the Olympics.

So, why is the triple axel so difficult?

This video explains it.

It is a shame that Tonya Harding is best remembered for the altercation with Nancy Kerrigan. This performance at the 1991 U.S. Figure Skating Championships was amazing.
