A California man scratched off his lottery ticket and thought he had won the $10,000 prize.
He returned home to share the great news with his roommates.
When the man went to the lottery offices to redeem his winnings the next day, he was told the ticket had been altered. That is when he suspected his roommate of stealing the winning ticket.
When the roommate attempted to redeem the winning ticket, lottery officials were unaware that it had been reported stolen. They told the alleged thief that the ticket was actually worth $10 million.
As the lottery office began their customary process for verifying the ticket authenticity, they realized the ticket had been reported stolen.
The lottery office worked with police to make the arrest and return the ticket to the rightful owner.
