Most Of Us Can’t Afford Not To Go To Work If We're Sick

You’d think after COVID, we'd be taking better care of ourselves and not work when sick, but according to a new report, that’s just not happening.

The survey by Theraflu finds:

  • 41% of Americans say the “always” or “often” work sick.
  • Money is one of the biggest issues people will work sick, with 92% of people working sick because they can’t afford a sick day.
  • And 64% say taking a day off would result in financial strain.
  • Plus 67% say inflation is a factor in them not taking an unpaid sick day.
  • 62% are reluctant to take a sick day, even if they are offered, because of layoffs happening in the U.S.
  • 62% say that unless their symptoms are really severe, they would go into the office if they feel sick.
  • Other than financial reasons...
    • Two-in three people worry they’ll be reprimanded by their employer if they call in sick.
    • 63% feel guilty about taking sick time because of shortages in staff.
    • 60% say their work actively discourages them to call out.
  • And with more people working from home, the stigma of calling in sick is even larger.
  • In fact, 68% of people who work remotely say they still feel obligated to work rather than take a sick day.
  • That only changes if someone actually tests positive for COVID.
