What do you do when you’re so mad, you feel like you could punch a wall? While there’s no one right way to respond to anger, there are plenty of wrong ones. The thing is, anger doesn’t just go away, but that doesn’t mean you have to give into it in a fit of rage. When you feel anger or rage, it helps to have coping techniques at the ready.
These are some healthy ways to blow off steam and let that rage out:
- Get moving however you can - One tried and true way to redirect your rage is through an intense workout. Exercise is stress relief, no matter what form it’s in. Whether you’re into boxing, running or just throwing a ball against a wall, do it. And while it may feel silly, letting yourself yell or grunt while you do it can also help you release the anger.
- Visually represent your frustration - There are several ways to do this. You can write down all your angry thoughts and then destroy the paper in any way you like, from sending it through a shredder to lighting it on fire. The key is to be mindful about the fact that you’re letting that anger go.
- Channel your feelings into creativity - Looking for a more soothing way to release your rage? Try singing, drawing or painting, journaling, listening to calming and uplifting music or yoga. Any of those can help you channel your anger in a more controlled way.
- Talk with someone you trust - Bottling up your feelings tends to backfire, so consider reaching out to a trusted friend or loved one you feel comfortable being open with. Getting some perspective can help you process your emotions and calm down, no wall punching required.
