Do you feel intimidated stepping into a new fitness class? You’re definitely not alone. It can feel like everyone already has their “spot” in the room and they all know each other and what to do. So it’s not surprising that many of us have a fear of trying new workouts, but Keisha Parrish, a certified yoga, Pilates and TRX fitness instructor, says it’s totally worth pushing yourself to try new types of exercise.
For one, doing different kinds of workouts are good because your body gets used to any physical activity you do regularly, so switching it up challenges your muscles and prevents overuse injuries. Changing your routine also makes you less likely to get bored with your workouts. And trying new things is also good for the brain because it challenges it in new ways and keeps you from going on autopilot.
To get more comfortable trying a new workout, Parrish recommends:
- Try workouts that actually appeal to you - Just because your friend loves running doesn’t mean you will, as our bodies and our fitness goals are different. Find something you enjoy and you’ll be more likely to stick with it, too.
- Wear something that gives you confidence - If you feel physically comfortable, you’ll feel mentally comfortable, Parrish explains.
- Read class descriptions ahead of time - If you’re not sure what it entails after reading the class description, call the front desk and get insider info from staff members in the know.
- Look at the level - Even if you’re used to working out, an advanced group fitness class may be overwhelming as a first-timer, so start slow and build up to more challenging classes over time.
- Try it at home first - Thanks to YouTube, you can try workouts in the comfort of your living room before you try it in a class full of strangers. This helps you get familiar with movements and terms before your first class.
- Remember you’re not alone - Remind yourself that everyone felt like this on their first day and they’re all just trying to make it through, just like you. Focus on your goals and hang in there, you’ve got this!
