What's the most common social media sin?

Most of us have posted something on social media we came to regret, but new research reveals some states are worse than others when it comes to their online behavior. A study of more than 3-thousand Americans looks into whether they’ve engaged in 10 “social media sins” and which states have the most offenders.

  • It turns out New York is the worst, with its residents committing the most “social media sins” of any state.
  • More than half of the residents of the Empire State admit to having done each of the 10 “sins.”
  • Nearly three-quarters (72%) of folks in New York state confess to doing the most commonly committed “social media sin,” arguing with someone online.
  • On the flip side, Oregon is the most well-behaved state on social media, with only 7% of its residents committing these “sins.”

  1. Having an argument with someone on social media
  2. Posting something while angry or hurt that they later regretted
  3. Sending sexually provocative written messages
  4. Posting something while drunk they later regretted
  5. Posting abusive comments
  6. Sharing images or videos of someone else without their permission
  7. Sending sexually provocative images (nudes)
  8. Posting revealing images or videos of themselves
  9. Arguing with a celebrity on social media
  10. Catfishing someone
