With summer comes mosquitos and this season also comes with an added concern over malaria, with the pesky pests causing local spreads of the virus in Florida and Texas.

Experts say these five things can turn you into a magnet for mosquitoes:

  • Wearing black, red or orange clothes while outside, which are the most attractive colors to mosquitoes.
  • Drinking beer. A pest expert explains "Fermented beverages cause one's capillaries to expand, sending more blood to the skin's surface and making it heat up. This inherently produces more sweat, carbon dioxide, and lactic acid—all of which mosquitoes are attracted to."
  • Using floral or fruity soaps or lotions, which also attract mosquitoes.
  • Exercising outdoors, causing body heat and carbon dioxide to attract the pests.
  • Spending time near water.
