The "5 Second Rule," Busted!

Do you subscribe to the "five-second rule" when deciding whether food that's been dropped on the floor can be picked up and eaten? If so, experts have some bad news for you that probably shouldn't come as much of a surprise. The five-second rule is just a myth. Food picks up dirt and germs no matter how long it's on the floor. According to doctors, there is no recommended safe time for food to be consumed after it has been on the floor. One doctor, Kenneth Brown, explains, "Bacteria can transfer to food almost immediately upon contact," and it doesn't matter what kind of food it is. But if you happen to pick up a fallen French fry or piece of popcorn from the movie theater floor, it doesn't mean you'll necessarily get sick, although you could. That all depends on the strength of your immune system.
