Recent polling indicates that there’s a growing dissatisfaction with self-checkout systems among U.S. shoppers, with 43% supporting their removal all together, mostly due to concerns over job losses and a preference for human-to-human interaction. Retailers like Walmart and Dollar General are responding to this trend by reducing or removing self-checkout machines, citing theft and operational challenges. Studies have shown that self-checkouts contribute significantly to theft, which has led to legislative actions in some states to impose stricter regulations. Retailers are also adapting to the pushback against self-checkout by limiting their use and increasing employee training to improve customer service.
