Turns out, those annoying earworms could actually make you a better singer. Researchers at UC Santa Cruz discovered that when people sing these tunes, they often match the original pitch perfectly or come very close. For the study, 30 college were prompted at random times to record any music playing in their heads. What the researchers discovered was pretty amazing: nearly half of the recordings were in the exact same key as the original songs, and nearly 70% were within one semitone – which is the smallest interval between notes in Western music – of the original key. This suggests many of us have a hidden “perfect pitch” ability, even if we don’t realize it.
