Whenever you fly, you’re told to put your smartphone into “airplane mode,” but do you know why? A pilot going by @perchpoint on TikTok has racked up thousands of views and comments with his simple explanation. Forgetting to make the switch on your phone won’t “cause the plane to fall out of the sky” or “mess with the systems on board.” However, if too many passengers forget to switch to “airplane mode,” some of those devices will try to connect to radio towers, and those radio waves can interfere with the radio waves the pilots of the headset the pilots are using.” It’s not the end of the world, but it can be annoying when a pilot is trying to understand directions but all they hear is interference that sounds like a mosquito in their ears because of the interference.
