A quick scroll on social media and you’ll find plenty of people saying it just doesn’t feel like the holiday season this year or that they’re not enjoying themselves like they used to. And we get it, the holiday spirit doesn’t just automatically arrive on your doorstep December 1st like a box from Amazon, sometimes it takes a little effort to get it going.

Fortunately, there are some easy things you can do to snap out of a holiday funk. If you’re in one and you don’t want to be a grinch all season, try these:

  • Watch classic holiday shows and movies - Thanks to all the streaming services, it’s easier than ever to find the holiday content you actually like to watch. Some are into old school favorites, like “Miracle on 34th Street” or “It’s a Wonderful Life,” others prefer modern classics like “Elf” or “Love Actually,” or even “Die Hard,” if you consider it a Christmas movie. Even if it’s “Friends” Christmas episodes, watch them and you may just feel your holiday spirit grow.
  • Go to community events - Get out there and watch a tree lighting, a parade or a live nativity scene.
  • Decorate your house (or at least your bedroom) - You don’t have to put up a whole Christmas tree, but hang some lights, decorate a tiny tree, or make some paper snowflakes to deck your halls and change your mood.
  • Listen to the music from your childhood - Think about what you listened to with your family when you were a kid and make a playlist for yourself full of holiday tunes you actually enjoy. We won’t judge.
  • Make your devices cheery - You spend hours staring at your screens every day, so make them festive with holiday-themed wallpapers, or deck out your browser or turn your TV into a fireplace by streaming a yule log.
