Yes, there is a right way to load the dishwasher!

As every couple knows, many a fight has been triggered by differing views of how to load the dishwasher. And we’re sorry to tell you, but some of you are just wrong. Here’s what Whirlpool has to say about it:

  • Mugs, cups, glasses and water bottles go on the top rack, from back to front.
  • Plastic containers and lids can go on the top rack if they’re dishwasher safe.
  • Plates, large bowls and dishwasher-safe cookware go on the bottom rack.
  • Spoons and forks should be handle down. Knives should be blade down.
  • Face dishes toward the center, where the jets are.
  • Angle dishes downward.
  • Avoid overcrowding.
  • Place items between the tines, not over them. That’s the best way to keep them from knocking into each other.
  • Don’t pre-rinse. And definitely don’t use soap and then put a dish in the dishwasher – the detergent can mess things up.
