Having Sisters Makes You A Better Person

Growing up with sisters really is the best and worst of times. They’re your best friends but also steal your favorite shoes and never give them back. And according to recent research, having sisters can actually make you a better person.

Researchers from Brigham Young University found that having sisters boosts both self-esteem and mental health. And research shows siblings with sisters try to protect them from “feeling lonely, unloved, guilty, self-conscious and fearful.” So if you’re working that hard to protect someone else’s feelings like that, it shows you’re more nurturing and empathetic.

“What we know suggests that sisters play a role in promoting positive mental health,” explains Brigham Young University assistant professor Alex Jensen. “Later in life they often do more to keep families in contact with one another after the parents pass.”

This research also shows that all that fighting sisters do actually has an upside, too. Turns out all that arguing makes sisters better at communication and conflict resolution, so you can thank your sister for that.
