Are you a newer couple and fight? Is that normal?

When you’re newly in love and everything’s going perfectly in your relationship, it can seem like you’re never going to disagree with your partner. But inevitably that day comes and you’re faced with your first fight. It can really shake up that blissful secure feeling you had gotten so used to and make you wonder “Is it normal to be fighting so soon?”

Of course, there’s no clear-cut answer to that. According to marriage and family therapist Dr. Fran Walfish, “it’s less about time and more about when you feel comfortable enough to disagree openly with each other.” And the thing to remember is that it’s natural for couples to disagree and fight, so it doesn’t mean the end is near, it means things are normal.

But if you’re fighting on one of your first three to five dates with someone, that could be a sign communication doesn’t flow well between you or that you might not be an ideal fit, marriage and family therapist Nicole Richardson explains.

So when do most happy, healthy couples have their first fight? Not before the first few dates, according to these experts. And if both partners are having their needs met without conflict, then it could be even longer. Just keep in mind that when that first fight finally happens, you and your relationship can survive.
