World War II veteran George Boone was visiting Washington, D.C. from North Carolina on an Honor Flight and volunteers made sure to deviate from the planned tour so he could visit his late wife’s grave at Arlington National Cemetery. But at 96, the former B-24 pilot who was shot down and held as a prisoner of war by the Nazis, didn’t feel he could walk to her grave from the car.
George’s son, Jon, says he forgot the wheelchair and that it was the other two volunteers in the car with them who were so dedicated to the mission of getting George to that graveside that they offered to carry him. The veteran declined at first, but they wouldn’t accept no for an answer and made a chair with their arms to carry him to pay his respects.
The male volunteer was so touched by the moment, he insisted on carrying George back to the car himself. "He said, 'This is my honor and privilege. I'm going to carry you. Wrap your arms around my neck, I've got you," Jon explains. "And off they went."
