"Roseanne" Canceled After Star Barr's Racist Tweet

ABC has canceled its hit Roseanne reboot after star Roseanne Barr made a racist joke on Twitter about former White House aide Valerie Jarrett. "Roseanne's Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show," ABC president Channing Dungey said in a statement. Late Monday, Barr tweeted about Jarrett, who is African-American and was born in Iran, "Muslim Brotherhood & Planet of the Apes had a baby=VJ." After that tweet ignited considerable outrage, Barr tweeted Tuesday, "I apologize to Valerie Jarrett and to all Americans. I am truly sorry for making a bad joke about her politics and her looks. I should have known better. Forgive me--my joke was in bad taste." Before Dungey announced the network's decision, Roseanne writer Wanda Sykes--a black lesbian who, like Barr, is a well-known comedian and actress--tweeted that she "will not be returning to @RoseanneonABC." ICM, the talent agency which represented Barr, also dropped her as a client on Tuesday, calling her comments "disgraceful and unacceptable."
