Tips for Having a Safe 4th of July!

July is just around the corner, which means it's nearly time for fireworks and hot dogs. It's easy to get caught up in the festivities of the Fourth of July, but the Red Cross has some safety tips. The organization says the safest way to enjoy fireworks is to attend a public fireworks show put on by professionals. You should stay at least 500 feet away from the show, and be sure to leave any areas where untrained amateurs are using fireworks. If you are setting off fireworks at home you should never give them to small children, and never throw or point them toward people, animals, or vehicles. Just to be safe, keep a supply of water nearby. Make sure the person lighting the fireworks wears eye protection-- and be sure to only light one firework at a time. Make sure to keep your fireworks in a cool, dry, place, and never attempt to relight "a dud." Other tips: hot cars can be deadly so never leave children or pets in your vehicle; don't leave picnic foods out in the hot sun; always wash your hands before preparing food; and stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids. (Red Cross/ PR Newswire
