Open makes you closed … Open office plans are all the rage because they are supposed to take down walls and encourage communication between workers. Instead, they are doing just the opposite. A new study has found that open office spaces are actually causing workers to close up and “socially withdraw,” opting to email and text rather than communicate face-to-face. Researchers found that when an open floor plan was instituted, employees spent 72 percent less time interacting in person. And these floor plans hurt the bottom line too. Managers reported that productivity actually declined when the floor plan was redesigned. (The Ladders)
