Starbucks to Open 1st U.S. Store Where All Baristas Know Sign Language
Starbucks is opening its first U.S. "signing" store in Washington D.C., where all baristas will be proficient in American Sign Language. (HuffPo notes that a signing Starbucks already exists in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.) The coffee chain's new store will be located near Gallaudet University, a school for deaf and hard-of-hearing students. Deaf baristas will wear ASL aprons, while hearing workers will wear a pin that reads "I sign." Additionally, a visual display will show customers when their orders are ready rather than baristas calling out names and orders.
