American Academy of Pediatrics urging parents to allow their kids to play

The American Academy of Pediatrics released a policy statement urging parents to allow their kids to play more. Aside from the physical benefits of free play, the statement emphasized the mental and intellectual upside of "joyful discovery." “We’re in a climate where parents are feeling like they need to schedule every minute of structured time, and 30 percent of kindergartens offer no recess,” lead author Dr. Michael Yogman told The New York Times. "Play is the way they learn and the way they develop...Kids develop 21st-century skills in play, skills that are crucial for adults in the new economy, that help them collaborate and innovate.”
