People have been coming to Donut City in Seal Beach, California for nearly 30 years to get sweet treats from John Chan and his wife, Stella. But last September, some of their loyal customers noticed Stella wasn’t coming in anymore and John revealed she had suffered a brain aneurysm and was recovering in a nursing home.
As word of Stella’s illness spread in the community, business really picked up. Suddenly, customers who used to buy a doughnut or two were buying them by the dozens and John is selling out earlier so he can close the shop and go spend time with his wife. He says they used to sell doughnuts from 4:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., but last Friday he was sold out by 8:30 a.m. Their customers care about the couple and want him to get as much time with Stella as possible.
John says he wasn’t sure what he’d do without his wife by his side at the shop and he’s extremely grateful to his customers. “I’d like to thank neighbors in the community who’ve helped me since my wife fell sick,” he says. “The community has been helping me and supporting me.”
