Clean Bathrooms Are Good For Business

  • 69% of folks have had an unpleasant experience because of a public potty, and that could be affecting a store’s business
  • 55% of people say they would be unlikely to return to a business that had an unsanitary bathroom, while 52% of people say they would “definitely” or “probably” spend more money at a business with a clean restroom
  • Bathrooms these days are so gross that one in three Americans say they’d be willing to pay to use a toilet if it means it was guaranteed to be clean and well-stocked

Anyone who’s used a public toilet, and that’s likely most people, knows the experience can be truly gross. In fact, a new poll by Bradley Corp finds that 69% of folks have had an unpleasant experience because of a public potty. And while stores and restaurants may not be too worried about their gross bathrooms, it turns out they should be.

The poll finds that 55% of people say they would be unlikely to return to a business that had an unsanitary bathroom, while 39% would think twice before going back. What’s more, 52% of people say they would “definitely” or “probably” spend more money at a business with a clean restroom.

Basically, establishments should realize that customers are definitely judging them based on their bathroom. The truth is, 64% of consumers say they are more likely to choose a business with a clean, well-maintained bathroom, with women more likely to factor a bathroom into their decision then men (67% vs. 61%).

And bathrooms these days are so gross that one in three Americans say they’d be willing to pay to use a toilet if it means it was guaranteed to be clean and well-stocked. And there’s good reason for that since most folks are used to encountering a whole host of aggravations when it comes to public restrooms. Among the top aggravations:

  • A toilet that is clogged or not flushed (85%)
  • Empty or jammed toilet paper dispensers (83%)
  • Partition doors that don’t latch (78%)
