Dogs are man's best friend, but that doesn't stop some kids from being scared of them. Technically called cynophobia, the earlier you intervene, the better the prognosis for the condition will be. An expert says the first step to help your child is to acknowledge their fear as legitimate, and make sure you maintain a positive attitude when you approach someone with a dog, asking things like "Can we meet your dog?" instead of things like "Is it safe to pet your dog?" You also should not rush your child into a playdate with a dog, but once they are more comfortable initiate a meeting with an older dog that is less likely to jump-- be sure to reward their bravery after meeting a dog. If all else fails consult a psychologist or psychiatrist to help.
