Mistakes That Cost Us More At The Grocery Store

Not happy with the cost of your grocery shopping? Prices at supermarkets continue to climb thanks to inflation, but it turns out, tweaking your shopping habits could help you save more. Some shoppers don’t realize small mistakes they’re making could cost them a significant amount of money, but they’re easy to fix.

Avoid these grocery store mistakes and you’ll be spending less in the checkout line.

  • Not planning your shopping list with sales in mind - Most grocery stores have weekly sales and specials and taking advantage of those will help you save. Check out the store’s fliers or website then plan your meals around what’s discounted that week.
  • Buying only name-brand products - Some brand-name items are better than others, but if you’re only buying popular brands, you’re probably spending more money than you need to. Don’t be afraid to try store-brand items to see if they taste the same for a fraction of the cost.
  • Not using your store’s mobile app - Your favorite supermarket probably has a mobile app that could help you save. In addition to outlining sale items for the week, these grocery store apps may also offer other ways to save, like digital coupons, which are easy to use and score you even more discounts.
  • Ignoring package sizing - Most of us are looking at prices when we walk the store aisles, but it’s also important to consider the size of the items you’re buying. One product may technically be cheaper, but because of packaging, you may get a lot less than a similar item that’s just a little more expensive. So pay attention to both package size and price to make more informed decisions.
  • Paying with a debit card or cash - If you can use a rewards credit card instead, you’ll earn cash back or other rewards every time you load up on groceries. And that’ll save you even more on the items you’re already buying.
