Michigan Six-Year-Old Goes On $1K Grubhub Spending Spree

Do you ever let your kid play a game or watch a show on your phone? Many parents do, but they may rethink that after hearing about the Michigan boy who went on a spending spree while playing on his dad’s phone. Mason Stonehouse is only six, but he managed to find the Grubhub app and start ordering.

When food delivery people began showing up, Mason’s dad, Keith, was confused at first, but then it clicked and he realized his son was “going to town” on Grubhub. The kid ordered everything from chicken pita wraps to chili cheese fries to multiple orders of ice cream. So much food was ordered that Keith’s bank sent a fraud alert declining a $400 pizza order.

The dad tried to stop the orders once he realized what was going on, but it was too late, so the family enjoyed a lot of leftovers and even shared with their neighbors. Grubhub later reached out to the Stonehouse fam about Mason’s “unexpected spending spree,” giving them $1,000 of Grubhub gift cards to make up for it. His parents tried to turn it into a teachable moment, taking coins from his piggy bank to help him understand the money he spent. And they say it’s going to take some time before the big spender gets his phone privileges back.
