LIST -- Foods That Contain A Day’s Worth Of Sugar

When you’re trying to cut back on sugar, you know there are some things you need to avoid, like visits to the ice cream shop and Venti Frappuccinos at Starbucks. But there are all kinds of sneaky sugar bombs out there, so you have to know what you’re eating. The American Heart Association recommends women east no more than six teaspoons or 24 grams of sugar a day, and these surprising foods pack that and more.

  • Lemonade - Adding some freshly squeezed lemon to your water is a nice way to spruce it up with some flavor and vitamin C, but lemonade is made with a lot of sugar, so read your labels or make your own so you don’t get too much of the sweet stuff.
  • Blueberry Muffin - Read the ingredients and the grams of sugar on the nutrition label to know how much you’re getting and it adds up fast. For example, the Starbucks Blueberry Muffin with Yogurt and Honey has a whopping 30 grams of sugar!
  • Yogurt and Fruit Parfait - Unsweetened yogurt and fresh fruit is generally a healthy choice, but when you’re grabbing one at a restaurant, read carefully to know how much sugar you’re getting. The Greek Yogurt With Mixed Berries Parfait at Panera has five different kinds of sugars adding up to a total of 30 grams, which is as much as three Krispy Kreme doughnuts.
  • Tomato soup - You might not think of it as sweet, but the second ingredient is often high fructose corn syrup and a can of Campbell’s condensed tomato soup contains 30 grams of sugar.
  • Cereal - If you like to down a bowl of cereal for a sweet snack, try to use a small bowl so you don’t over-serve yourself and choose what you fill the bowl with wisely. A three-quarters cup serving of Honey Smacks has 16-grams of sugar, but fill your bowl with twice that and you’ve got 32 grams of sugar, about as much as in 30 gummy bears.
  • Margarita - The salty, tangy cocktail goes down easy, but one drink can pack a day’s worth of sugar. Chili’s Ultimate Fresh Margarita has 40 grams of sugar, which is as much as 40 jelly beans! So drink wisely so you can still snack on some treats, too.
