How much time do your kids spend on screens every day? A new study from Uswitch reveals just how much of our lives and our kids’ lives are spent in front of screens. It finds that the average American adult is spending lots of time on social media, with Facebook being the biggest time suck. U.S. users spend an average of 58 minutes a day on the app, which is more than 325 hours a year! Instagram comes in second, where we’re spending a total of about 297 hours a year!
And when it comes to kids and screen time, the study finds children between five and 16 are logging an average of nine hours every day in front of technology. That number is really high, but it does include time watching TV, as well as video games, smartphones and tablets. The research also shows teens and tweens are spending less time watching TV the traditional way and more time watching it on their phones.
As for the social media sites they’re into, TikTok and Instagram are popular with youth, but one you’re less likely to find them? Facebook and that’s because they think of it as “the place you’ll find your parents.” And the research finds something Americans of all ages are guilty of - watching TV and scrolling their phones at the same time.
- Want to help cut down on your kids’ screen time? The Mayo Clinic recommends setting clear boundaries for screen time, putting down your own device and engaging with your child and setting up “phone-free zones” around the house.
