If You Use This Popular Cell Service, Your Phone May Not Work Soon

  • Boost Mobile customers; there's a chance that your phone could shut down in around five months.
  • T-Mobile has plans to shut down its CDMA 3G cellular network on January 1, 2022, in order to boost its other technologies. The majority of Boost Mobile's nine million customers are on that 3G network.
  • This whole mess started when T-Mobile closed its $26 billion deal for Sprint last year and sold Sprint's Boost prepaid business to DISH. The customers were on Sprint's CDMA network, which T-Mobile has now said that it planned to shut down at the beginning of 2022.
  • DISH was originally supposed to have seven years to build a new tech infrastructure for Boost Mobile customers, but there's been so much squabbling between DISH and T-Mobile that all agreements have broken down.
  • T-Mobile has said it's DISH's problem now, and if they cared about its nine million new customers, they'd buy them all appropriate phones before the 3G network gets shut down.
  • It's gotten so bad that the Department of Justice has gotten involved, telling the companies to figure it out or the law will force an agreement.
