Steve's Food News: Taco Bell Finally Debuts Crispy Chicken Sandwich Taco

While fast food joints across the country have been fighting the “chicken sandwich wars” for some time, Taco Bell has been teasing customers about their new Crispy Chicken Sandwich Taco since February. After testing it out, it’ll officially drop nationwide September 2nd.

If you missed it, somehow, Taco Bell says the Crispy Chicken Sandwich Taco is “not quite a sandwich, not quite a taco” and they’re right – but it’s also what you probably imagine: Chicken that’s been marinated in jalapeno buttermilk, seasoned with a Mexican spice blend and wrapped in a crunchy tortilla coating. It’s served in taco-shaped “puffy bread” (like the Gordita shells you know) and it’s topped off with Taco Bell’s signature chipotle sauce. Doesn’t sound spicy enough? You can also add slices of crunchy jalapenos.

Taco Bell is also having a bit of fun with the “is it a taco or a sandwich” argument. The company is holding a "debate" between the University of Georgia and Clemson University football teams during the schools' September 4th game to decide. "Even the masterminds from our test kitchen couldn't decide if it was more taco or sandwich,” Taco Bell's global chief food innovation officer Liz Matthews says in a statement. “Which is why we're excited to bring in the debate team experts to have some fun.”
