A new study has looked at the effects of pre-bedtime use of social media

If you’re someone who likes to wind down before you go to bed by scrolling TikTok you may want to think twice about it. A new report suggests that the social media app may be keeping you from getting a good night’s sleep.

  • We’ve all heard that that the blue light emitted from phones can cause sleep issues, and now a new study has looked into the effects of all that pre-bedtime use of social media.
  • It claims that those who use TikTok right before bed have the most trouble falling asleep.
  • In fact, after scrolling through TikTok it takes users one hour and seven minutes to fall asleep.
  • In addition, they only spend 14% of their sleep cycle in REM sleep, half the recommended amount for a healthy adult.
  • And TikTok isn’t the only app that’s bad for you:
    • Instagram users take 58 minutes to fall asleep and spend 15.5% off the night in REM sleep.
    • Snapchat users take 56 minutes to fall asleep and spend 16% off the night in REM sleep.
    • Twitter users take 50 minutes to fall asleep and spend 18% off the night in REM sleep.
    • Facebook users take 45 minutes to fall asleep and spend 19.5% off the night in REM sleep.
  • In comparison, those who don’t use their devices before bedtime spend 23% of their sleep cycle in REM sleep.
  • ONE MORE THING! If you’re worried about losing TikTok time if you give it up before bed, you shouldn’t, because soon you may be encountering it everywhere. The TikTok channel is being added to Atmosphere's streaming TV package, which means it may soon be running in businesses. Companies already running the Atmosphere channel include: Taco Bell, Burger King, Meineke Car Care, Westin, and Texas Roadhouse.
