A good Samaritan in Englewood, Florida, wades through chest-high water to check on the elderly mother of a woman she’s never met. As Hurricane Ian ravaged Southwest Florida, Christine Bomlitz became increasingly concerned about her elderly mom, Shirley Affolter, who lives in the storm’s path.

The 84-year-old Englewood retiree had lost her cell phone days before the storm and when the hurricane hit, her landline went out. Unfortunately, Bomlitz lives across the country in Las Vegas and couldn’t personally check in on her mother, so the daughter desperately pleaded for help in several posts to social media, hoping someone would see if Affolter was okay.

Fellow Englewood resident, Cheynne Prevatt, saw Bomlitz’s plea and volunteered to try and visit Affolter’s home even though she’d never met them. After wading through chest-deep floodwaters, the 26-year-old made it to the house and was relieved to find that the octogenarian was alive and safe. Affolter was able to speak to her daughter briefly, but her hearing aids had stopped working, so Prevatt took a picture of her safe and dry and texted it to her daughter. After confirming that she was alive, Prevatt and Bomlitz made plans for her to be evacuated and later someone returned to the house with a paddleboard to ferry her to dry land.
