Have you ever wondered why a stop sign has eight sides? It is actually Mississippi's fault.
The first stop signs were small, white and square.
Seeing the chaos on the streets, a branch of Mississippi’s highway department suggested a change in all street signs. They devised a solution where the more sides to the sign, the more dangerous the hazard.
Therefore, stop signs received the octagon shape. Since a circle has infinite sides, it became the sign for the most dangerous situations, like railroad crossings.
