I remember the first day moving into my room at college. I didn't take too much. The trip home was close enough to grab stuff as I went.
As I look over this checklist, there are a few things that I agree are critical to dorm life, such as raised bunks. The rooms are simply too small to take up valuable floor space with beds. Get them up in the air, and use the space under for your desk. Backpack, totes and microwave are all "must have".
On the other hand, an umbrella is on the list. I don't think I owned an umbrella until I was out of college. Rain was just a great excuse to skip class. If I really had to be there, I'd cut through 17 buildings in order to stay out of the rain.
Check out the list. Is there anything you think is missing?
