Last week at Lakeview Elementary in Colonial Heights, Virginia, three first graders proved that heroes come in small packages.
Teacher Madison Swift was in the middle of a lesson when she realized she couldn’t breathe. She had been eating while working with a student, and suddenly, she was choking. The kids noticed right away—and what they did next is incredible.
Quick Thinking From Three Little Heroes
Each child reacted differently, but together they made the perfect team.
- Dereck Contreras-Franco hit the emergency call button and shouted for help.
- Bryson Doss, just six years old, sprinted out of the room to find another teacher.
- Kolton Hersh, sitting closest to Swift, bent her forward and gave back blows that dislodged the food.
Swift says those back blows saved her life. She also credits the trust they had built in class for their quick response.
A Well-Deserved Reward
At the end of the week, the boys got to pick treasures from her classroom box—a small thank-you for a life-saving act that no one will forget.
